How to Stabilize a Critical Foal Prior to and During Referral
نویسنده
چکیده
This discussion offers guidelines for the management of sick neonatal foals during initial evaluation on the farm and prior to referral to a secondary care facility. Essential history regarding the pregnancy and delivery, placental examination, highlights of neonatal examination, and selected laboratory tests are discussed with regard to early diagnosis of the foal’s primary problem(s). The most common metabolic and physiologic problems facing any fading newborn foal include hypoxemia, hypercapnea, hypotension, dehydration, hypothermia, hypoglycemia and septicemia. Methods for managing these conditions are addressed. Author’s address: Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center, 40 Frontage Rd, PO Box 188 Ringoes, NJ 08551. © 2000 AAEP.
